THE CHALLENGE
Marine Science is one of the most important scientific
fields at the Smithsonian Institution, and yet there is no one location
for Marine Science at the Institution. Any department throughout the
Smithsonian could have a scientist whose work involves marine science.
The Smithsonian Scientific Diving office therefore approached us with
the concept of creating one web site that would accomplish the following:
- Bring together all of the marine science that takes place at
the Smithsonian Institution
- Explain the importance of Marine Science
- Describe the fascinating research that's taking place at the
Smithsonian Institution
- Provide a resource for contacting scientists involved in Marine
Science
- Explain the Marine Science Network and show the geographic location
of its member facilities
THE SOLUTION
We built a site using an image bank and scientific papers
provided by the chief scientific diving officer. Sorting through years
of images and scientific text, we created a unique design with a slide
show that continually runs from the home page. Maps were added to
the web site to highlight the locations of Smithsonian Marine Research
Project sites worldwide. Content was pulled from scientific papers
and modified slightly to meet the needs of the web site.
THE SUCCESS
Overall, the site is exciting to look at, interesting
to the general public, and informative to the scientific community.
The Smithsonian Scientific Diving Office continues to utilize this
site as their resource to the general public and the scientific community.
